St. Paul/Minneapolis
Inter-League Series

HISTORY

In 1990, in an effort to eliminate the need to schedule non-conference football games, the St. Paul and Minneapolis City Conferences agreed to play each other on the final week of the regular season. To stimulate interest and create fair competition, the results of the conference season would determine which teams would play each other. The first place teams from both cities would play each other, resuming the Twin Cities Football Game, which was discontinued in 1978. The runner-up teams in both leagues would play each other, third place playing third place, etc.

In 1997, with the addition of Arlington to the St. Paul City, there was an extra team which meant that one team from St. Paul would have to sit out each year. Since Arlington was the "new kid on the block" and first in alphabetical order, the Phoenix played a non-conference game not involving a Minneapolis school. This was done for two years so that home-and-home contracts could be agreed upon. In 1999, Cretin-Derham requested to play a non-conference game for a two-year period. In 2001, Central did not play in the interleague series. With Cretin-Derham becoming an independent in football in 2002, the series returned to its original format of all teams playing each other. In 2009, Arlington did not have a varsity team so only six games were played which is the format that was used until 2011 when only five teams from Minneapolis could compete. In 2012, a St. Paul team played a non-conference game in lieu of playing in the Inter-League Series.

The series was discontinued beginning in the 2013 season because both conferences played multiple non-conference games between themselves during the regular season.

St. Paul enjoyed a great deal of success over the years, having lost only three times in the annual series to its Minneapolis counterparts. Over the twenty-three years of competition, St. Paul posted 6-1 records three times; a 5-1 record twice; and 5-2 results four times with 4-3 game results eight times. In 2011, St. Paul posted a 4-1 record and in 2012 a 3-2 record. One year (1994) it swept all seven games played. St. Paul suffered its only losing years in 2002 and 2006 when Mpls. won five games and in 2003 when it was nipped by a 4-3 margin. St. Paul compiled a fantastic 101-52 record! Leading the way were the Knights from Harding with eighteen wins, the Johnson Governors with seventeen, and the Como Park Cougars at fifteen, Highland Park Scots and Humboldt Hawks with thirteen, the Central Minutemen with twelve wins and the Cretin-Derham Raiders with ten wins. Arlington recorded four wins during its time in the conference.
