STATISTICIAN'S NOTE: Beginning in the fall of 1953, with the closing of Marshall the previous spring, the schools desired to play only seven conference games (to allow for a non-conference game). Mathematically, it is impossible for nine schools to play seven games (one school would always have to play one more game than the other schools). It was decided that the team that had eight conference opponents, in its first game of the season, would count that game as a non-conference game, thus giving everyone seven games. So, from 1953-1961, each of the nine teams took turns in playing a conference opponent and having it not count in the standings. Below the standings brackets for each of these years indicates the team that had the game count as a non-conference game.
