When the Johnson boys soccer team defeated Harding 3-0 last Wednesday, the Governors were ecstatic that they had recorded their first St. Paul City Conference victory this season.

And then some.

For Johnson, which got two goals from junior forward Alessandro Caredda and another from sophomore midfielder Thay Yang, the victory snapped a 69-game conference losing streak. The last time Johnson had won a conference boys game was on Sept. 17, 2008, a 2-0 victory over Highland Park.

In that span, the Governors were 0-63-6. The 69-game winless streak is an all-time conference record.

"Honestly, we weren't aware of that streak," said Governors coach Dominic Isaac, a 2003 Johnson graduate. "When I took over the program four years ago, we were all about looking forward. We want to keep developing the program. In the four years I've been here, we have had four playoff wins."

The Governors are 2-10-1 overall, 1-7-1 in the conference with a tie against Highland Park.

"The St. Paul City Conference for boys soccer is really very good," Isaac said. "There isn't a pushover game in this conference."

Defending Class A state champion Como Park is third in the seven-team league with a 5-2-2 record. Central is in first place, 8-1 in the conference and 9-1-1 overall.
