GENERAL ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION
The middle school athletic program must be suited to the needs of youth who are undergoing rapid and irregular physical growth, who have a special need for improving body coordination, who seek to take part in an increasing number of activities, and who have a strong desire for group acceptance. The middle school pupils are broadening their interests and seeking ways to develop their talents. Therefore, to meet these needs, they must be given a variety of activities within the athletic program.
The healthful and safe living learned in the classroom, the gymnasium and on the playing field should be practiced throughout the activities of the entire athletic program.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL
- The principal is responsible for the administration of the athletic program of the school.
- The school athletic director shall be responsible to the principal for such details as are required in conducting the athletic program.
- The school athletic director shall have the following powers and duties:
- To be responsible for the conduct of the athletic teams.
- To promote harmony and good conduct among the coaching staff.
- To plan for intramurals with the principal and coordinate this program
- Be responsible for all intramural schedules and supervision.
- Collect reports from intramural personnel. These reports will contain hours spent, numbers involved and other pertinent information.
- Meet with the intramural staff regularly.
- To act as liaison between the middle school and senior high school in matters pertaining to athletics.
- To be responsible for the dissemination of all materials and information pertinent to the sound promotion of athletics.
- To secure from the parent/guardian permission for the student to participate.
- To be responsible with the coaches to see that all athletes meet requirements in regards to physical examinations.
- To be responsible for preparing a budget and, in cooperation with the coaches, the purchase and care of equipment and supplies. Athletic equipment cannot be used by outside teams, organizations or individuals.
- To be responsible for such reports and information requested by the Athletic Council.
- To schedule all facilities for practice.
- To be responsible with the Athletic Council and coaches for hiring officials for flag football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball for home games/matches and submitting an Independent Contractor voucher after each home contest.
- To be present at all times when the school hosts an athletic event.
- The athletic director or a designated representative (must be an adult staff member) will meet the visiting team's bus and direct the visiting team to the appropriate locker room and give them any necessary information.
- After the event, the athletic director or school representative will accompany the visiting team back to their respective bus. Hopefully, this will assist in preventing any harassment and promote the atmosphere of sportsmanship.
- Coaches
- Coaches are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that will reflect good sportsmanship to those under their direction.
- The coach shall be responsible for the normal duties delegated to a coach in interscholastic competition for:
- The health and safety of the players
- Inter-school relations
- Informing players regarding the eligibility rules.
- To be responsible with the athletic director to see that all athletes have physical examinations, have paid the participation fee, and are informed of the procedure to be followed in reporting an injury.
- Duties toward the team and school do not cease until the completion of the sports season.
- After games or daily practice, the coach should see that all of the athletes are out of the building -- be the last one to leave.
- Athletic Budget
- The budget is the responsibility of the athletic director and all purchases must be made with his/her approval.
- Money from the athletic budget is to be used to purchase supplies for the athletic program. No purchases for intramural activities or the physical education program are to be made.
- Purchase Requisition Forms must be used for supply purchases over $1,000 and for equipment over $250.
