CODES OF CONDUCT

The St. Paul City Conference athletic programs strive to promote good sportsmanship at each of its extra-curricular activities. Athletic games and tournaments have become increasingly competitive and exciting. It can intensify, however, the stress level of all involved. The conference follows the "TeamUp" policy offered by the Minnesota State High School League as a guide for athletes, coaches and parent conduct.

COACHES:

  1. Follow the rules of the sport during the progress of the contest.
  2. Accept the decisions of the contest officials without showing inappropriate emotions such as arguing with a contest official.
  3. Avoid unsportsmanlike gestures or language.
  4. Display modesty in victory and graciousness in defeat.
  5. Avoid public display or criticism in front of participants or spectators.

PARTICIPANTS:

  1. Show respect for opponents by shaking hands with them before and after the contest.
  2. Accept the decisions of contest officials without showing inappropriate emotions such as arguing with a contest official.
  3. Avoid unsportsmanlike gestures or language.
  4. Display modesty in victory and graciousness in defeat.
  5. To follow all rules and expectations of coaches and the sport on and off the playing field.

SPECTATORS:

  1. Show an interest in the contest and take part in cheers with the cheerleaders AND applauding good performances made by any participant.
  2. Work cooperatively with contest officials and faculty supervisors who are there to keep order.
  3. Refrain from crowd booing, foot stomping, or making negative comments or applying blame on the participants, coaches or contest officials.
  4. Stay off the playing field, floor or contest area at all times.
  5. Show respect for public property by not causing damage to equipment or facilities.

PARENTS/GUARDIANS:

  1. Demonstrate positive, reinforcing behavior at all contest.
  2. Be sensitive and aware of the participation and coaches, realizing they are doing the best they can regarding a total team approach.
  3. Know that athletes and other children may model your behavior. Be a good sport!

CHEERLEADERS:

  1. Use discretion in selecting times to cheer.
  2. Lead positive cheers which support and uplift your team.
  3. Encourage support for any participant that leaves the contest after being injured.

OFFICIALS:

  1. Accept your role in an unassuming manner.
  2. Maintain confidence and poise, controlling the contest from start to finish.
  3. Know the rules of the game thoroughly and abide by the established Code of Ethics.
  4. Publicly shake hand with coaches or both teams before the contest.
  5. Never exhibit emotions or argue with participants and coaches when enforcing rules.

MEDIA:

  1. Report acts of sports-like behavior without giving undue publicity to unsportsmanlike conduct.
  2. Refrain from making negative comments towards participants, coaches or contest officials.
  3. Recognize efforts of all whom participate in the contest.
  4. Report facts without demonstrating partiality to either team.

In the event of poor sportsmanship, the following criteria will be followed:

FIRST OFFENSE:

  1. Individual(s) will be asked to leave for the remainder of the contest.
  2. Building principal will be notified.
  3. Letter will be sent to the M.S.H.S.L.

SECOND OFFENSE:

  1. Individual(s) will not be able to attend the next three games.
  2. Letter will be sent to the M.S.H.S.L.

THIRD OFFENSE:

  1. Individual(s) will be terminated from attending the remainder of games.
  2. If applicable, individual(s) will be terminated from attending the state tournament.
